Short Courses Summer 2018
A series of short courses during the summer break for anyone who would like to try out the various disciplines.

These courses also offer the opportunity for a fun family day out exploring new art techniques together.

Most short courses are priced at £75 per day for a 6-hour day, and run from 9.30am - 4.30pm, with a 1-hour lunch break from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.  Life Drawing and Life Sculpture classes include an additional fee to cover the model costs and are priced at £95 and £100 per day respectively.  Half day classes are priced at £40 for 3 hours, and evenings at £30 for 2.5 hours.

Materials and basic tools will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own. You may also wish to bring an overall or plastic-coated apron for protection where required.

There will be an additional materials cost of £3.50/lb for glazed ceramics, and £2.50/lb for unglazed ceramics.

Light refreshments will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch or food to share for full-day courses.

Places on these courses are restricted to two people, so please book early to secure your place. This offers a wonderful opportunity for those with little previous experience. You will be given intensive tuition with lots of individual guidance. Pots will be thrown in the morning and turned in the afternoon of the first day and finished and glazed on the second day when they have been dried and fired. Different types of clay are available.
Materials and basic tools are supplied.

Abstract Sculpting in Clay
Thursday 2 August 9.30am - 4.30pm & Thursday 16 August 9.30am - 12.30pm
Enjoy creating your own abstract sculpture by exploring convex and concave interlocking forms.  You will be sculpting in Earth-stone crank clay which is well suited for large fired works. On the second half day of this course you will be decorating your work or using finishing techniques.
Materials and tools will be provided as well as source material.

Life Drawing
Friday 3 August, 9.30am - 4.30pm
Life drawing is valuable for improving your understanding of the human form, your powers of observation and thereby to advance your drawing abilities. You will be encouraged to work big and bold in a variety of different media of your choice.
Paper and some drawing materials will be provided. Feel free to bring along your own equipment and materials.

Hand–Built Ceramics
Saturday 4 August 9.30am - 4.30pm & Saturday 18 August 9.30am - 12.30pm
Saturday 11 August 9.30am - 4.30pm & Saturday 25 August 9.30am - 12.30pm
The first day of this workshop you will shown techniques to enable you to make coil built pots, slab built pots and mould made plates and dishes or garden planters.
These will be dried and fired ready for you to glaze on the second half day remaining of the course. Different methods of decorating can be explored.

Making Cabbage Leaf Dishes
Tuesday 7 August, 1.30pm - 4.00pm & Tuesday 14 August, 1.30pm - 4.00pm
This 5-hour course held over two sessions is your chance to make a series of dishes in clay in a variety of shapes and sizes. Actual leaves can be impressed into the clay and held in shape within a plaster mould. This is a simple and effective way of making colourful, decorative and useful ceramic pieces. The dishes will be glazed during the second session.

Drawing and Painting including en plein air
Wednesday 8 August, 1.30pm - 4.30pm (half day)
Friday 17 August 9.30 am - 4.30pm (all day)
Thursday 23 August 1.30pm - 4.30pm (half day)
A choice of one- and half-day courses tailored to individual needs and interests.  A range of source images will be supplied and the garden is attractive with interesting vistas for en plein air painting, if weather permits and you are inspired to venture outside despite the ants!  You may use any medium including mixed. Please feel free to bring your own equipment such as canvasses and sketch book.
A range of papers and media is available for drawing and painting.

Figurative Mono-Printmaking
Thursday 9 August, 9.30 am - 4.30pm
This course will enable you to explore the exciting techniques of mono-printing, with an emphasis on working with figurative subjects.  Please bring along any life drawings or photographs that you have. Some additional images of life models will be provided. You will be using oil based printing inks and vegetable oil for cleaning up should you be allergic to white spirit.
You may explore additive and subtractive processes and monochrome and colour to create interesting effects.

Life Sculpture
Friday 10 August, 9.30am - 4.30pm & Friday 24 August 9.30 am - 12.30pm
You will be using Earth-stone crank clay and working directly from the model. Full figure sculptures will be scaled down for firing and works produced will need to be hollowed. Fragment works such as of feet or hands may be full size. Representational, stylised and abstract interpretations are encouraged. The sculptural elements of mass, shape, proportions, rhythm and balance will all be explored.

Flower Drawing and Painting
Tuesday 14 August, 9.30 am - 12.30pm (half day)
Fresh flowers will be supplied for drawing and painting exercises. You are welcome to bring any particular flowers you would wish to draw and paint. Artworks may include informal sketches and studies or still life compositions. This course is aimed at developing your observation skills and confidence to use the medium of your choice.
You may use any medium including mixed. Please feel free to bring your own equipment such as canvasses and sketch book. A range of papers and media is available for drawing and painting.

Portrait Drawing & Painting
Tuesday 21 August, 9.30 am - 4.30pm
You will be working from photographs for this course. The aim is to develop your analytical skills, your observation skills to achieve a good likeness and give you more confidence to use the medium of your choice.
You will need to bring clear photographs of a relative or friend as a subject for your portrait drawing.
You may use any medium including mixed. Please feel free to bring your own equipment such as canvasses and sketch book. A range of papers and media is available for drawing and painting.

Abstract Drawing & Painting
Thursday 23 August, 9.30 am - 12.30pm
A course tailored to individual needs and interests.  A range of source images will be supplied to inspire you, but please feel free to bring ideas or images of your own to work from. The aim is to produce one or several abstract artworks which explore colour and shape and the formal elements of design.
You may use any medium including mixed. Please feel free to bring your own equipment such as canvasses and sketch book. A range of papers and media is available for drawing and painting.

Mono Printmaking
Friday 24 August, 1.30pm - 4.30pm
This half-day introductory mono printmaking course will enable you to explore the exciting techniques of mono-printing. Working from your own source material and inspirational images provided, you will be using oil based printing inks and vegetable oil for cleaning up should you be allergic to white spirit.
You may explore additive and subtractive processes and monochrome and colour to create interesting effects.
